Grandma Jane's Visit to Dallas

I'm beginning this blog while my son is asleep cuddling grandma for nap time...does it get any sweeter?!

We all have missed grandma.  The kids (and Biscuit) have especially loved having her here. We showed her around our neighborhood, our apartment living lifestyle and spent the rest of our time being tourists around the city.

Here was our itinerary.

Saturday: Lunch at Texas De Brazil (similar to Fogo De Chao for my Minnesotans) with Marcel and Ligia and their kids followed by a pool party at our place.  Then we rounded the day off with Bubble teas at our favorite little Vietnamese spot, RollnGo.

Sunday: Church and more time at the pool.

Monday: Breakfast at the world's largest Happy Meal McDonalds followed by a day in the water at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. (No photos here because our phones were in our locker of course so we could enjoy the day!)  Can I just say how awesome it is living close to a Six Flags and we have already got our money's worth on our season passes.

Tuesday: Lunch at one of Dallas's hot spots, Torchy's Tacos.  It was a first for me and I'll definitely be going back.  Then we ventured to Reunion tower to overlook the city's excellent view!

Wednesday: A trip to our favorite Mall (North Park Center) with sadly no celebrity sightings today but we did enjoy walking around, seeing the turtle pond and getting Toni Rivard cake balls before taking my mom back to the airport.

We will miss her but flights from Minneapolis to here are on the cheap so we will be seeing her again soon I'm sure!

Grandma Leona - I love you.

I had an all too familiar weekend.  Just months ago, I was in Chicago for the funeral of my grandma on my dad's side and this weekend, I was back again for the funeral of grandma on my mom's side.  Everything from the hotel to the red brick Chicago style funeral home to the saying goodbye struck familiarity.

One thing grandma always said was that she was going to live to be 111.  I don't know where that number came from but it was her number.  She had been on hospice the last two years and it sure felt like she was fighting for that 111 mark.  While that didn't happen, she made it well into her 90s and lived an amazing life.  From her story of immigration to falling in love with a ballroom dancer like herself, to marrying her love who was a funeral director, to end up styling the deceased hair as part of the business!  Grandma became an incredible author and now I can read her story as well as so much of my family history through her eyes in the books that she's published.

I have so many memories of Grandma that start in my childhood.

The giant parties in her basement,
Santa clause coming over every Christmas,
The model train around their Christmas tree,
Sarge, her giant german shepherd that I was scared of but wish i knew him now,
Her visiting us in Minneapolis and attending my softball games and neighborhood block parties,
Taking Limo rides just to go to Red Lobster,
All the polish and Czech food I ate and learned about every time I came back to Chicago,
Her red, brick, ranch-style home and each room with distinction,
The photo albums that flooded her basement,
The Eastern European vacation she took me on to explore our genealogy!

Not only does my mind fill with memories but with gratitude for all she and my grandpa did for our family to get us back on our feet so many times.

But the most special memory I have was seeing my grandparents love each other for over fifty years. Every time grandpa called grandma sweetheart and every time she wanted to be where he was in the house.  When Grandma laughed at grandpa’s jokes, the same ones he told over and over.  When they held hands and of course when they danced.  When their playful banter always followed up with an endearing expression like the words, sweetheart or I Love you.

I love the thought of grandma being with grandpa again!

Also, while she never got to meet my youngest daughter, I felt she was watching us at the funeral and got to meet her when I held her in my arms as I visited her casket.

I love you Grandma!

The last time I saw her, giving my son, her great grandson, a hug!

5 year Anniversary/Easter Weekend!

We've been married five years!  Sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday but most of the time it feels like it's been forever.  Jesus and I just fit.  We need each other.  I need him to push me out of my comfort zone, to make me take chances and to give me someone to rely on besides myself.  I need  him to teach me how to take a joke and understand sarcasm without being offended.   Jesus needs me to calm him down, to teach him that even if he grew up being loud culturally, he still needs to be sweet.  He needs me to let him know that not every leap of faith is worth taking.  He needs me to make him laugh after a stressful day of work. (We do that for each other).  He needs me to help take care of our babies that keep us both exhausted but full of joy.  Jesus and I are so opposite in so many ways but we're also so complimentary.  I can't explain how well he fits into my life and how I can be myself around him.  I mean the self I am around my family, that's who I can be around Jesus!  Everyone's a little bit crazy but Jesus is just the person to handle my crazy when it comes out.  As well as my anxieties and short comings.  I don't think I've ever met someone as forgiving as my husband.  Well...my mom...so maybe that's a reason I love Jesus so much because he forgives like she does.  I could go on but let's cut to the five year celebration!

We knew we wanted to do "something."  Like more than just go to dinner something.  So we bought seasons passes to Six Flags Over Texas which is just thirty minutes from where we live! Our first use was to celebrate our anniversary kid-free.  Two thirty-somethings riding the roller coasters.  What a fun day!  And scary...and sickening...but hey, we did it!

This ride is cray cray!  While going upside down those two loops, there's no shoulder harness, just a seatbelt and lap bar.  How can you upside down like that?!  Somehow the gravity pushes you down so much that it had me hunched over and I couldn't even push myself back up while in the loop!  That centrifugal force had me!  It gets better. Jesus went on the ride with virtual reality glasses so he could not see what was coming next except for the mimicking actions inside his glasses. He was a fighter pilot, shooting things and falling from buildings.  So intense and one of the first of its' kind!  My motion sickness was on its' last leg so I rode glasses free and that was still intense.

Mr. Freeze is another intense coaster that shoots you up the roller coaster track backwards at high speeds around a loop  and turns until you go backwards straight up a 180 degree angle, all to come rolling back down (but now forwards) the 180 degree hill and over the turns and loop one more time.

The next day was Easter and we celebrated with Jesus' cousins in McKinney.  Ligia made an amazing traditional dinner with ham and pineapple, cheesy sour cream potatoes and mini bundt cakes from "Nothing bundt cakes" bakery!  That place is surprising delicious.  After dinner, we sent the kids through the yard for the Easter egg hunt.  My family and sister-in-law's family, have always done an Easter egg hunt and I really missed not being with them this year. So to get to do it still, especially with my own little kids, made my day!

The good, the bad and the ugly.

I love social media just as much as the next girl in her early thirties livin' it up!  I love posting my adventures, new makeup, my kids, my dog, foodie photos, whatever.  But let's be serious for a second, do I post my whole life? NO!  Is my life only awesome adventures and cute photos?  Obviously not!  The reason I don't share too many negative things or complain on social media is because it's annoying as heck to me when other people do it.  I'm an unsympathetic jerk.  Just kidding (maybe)? I do feel for people in their times of need but for me personally, social media is my happy place.

Until now.  I have SO much to vent about!  You know how we're here in Dallas enjoying our new lives and got a new job and all that good stuff?  Well guess what else has happened?!  Since moving here, we've had our car towed and had to pay TWO days to get it out.  Then I popped two tires and we had to buy all four...well 3...but close enough!  Next, we had hail damage that annihilated the Audi.  (There's our intro to Texas weather).  I even lost one of my amazing grandmas since moving here.  Did you hear I got the flu for seven days and took two days off work but really should have been in bed all 5?!  It's the first year I didn't get a flu shot and I will not make that mistake again because I hadn't been so sick in years!  Then somehow, out of no where, probably from carrying my sweet baby either in her wrap or in her ridiculous car seat, I threw out my hip for about a week and still haven't gone to the doctor.  I feel much better now but I have all kinds of bruising.  I'm just going to take that as a sign that I'm healing???  Not only is my back/hip bruised but there are flea bites on it!  Why?  Because our apartment (and dog) are infested with fleas!  It has been terrible.  Every day after work, I have had to come home, spray the flea killer on the carpets and the dog, and clean and vacuum like crazy.  Luckily carpet is only in the bedrooms.  The fumigators are coming tomorrow, Gracias a Dios!

Here's my adorable puppy just finishing his flea bath with daddy.

So there, everyone's life is not what you see on social media!  On Saturday, I'm planning to go to Six Flags, to which my loving husband told me my string of bad luck will be culminated by one disastrous roller coaster ride

Pray for me.

Spring Break in Dallas!

It feels like so much has happened lately but that's just because we've been on Spring Break and had an exciting but very busy week with family and friends here in Dallas.  Jesus's cousin Uki and his wife Karen came to see us from Houston.  They are 3.5 hours away but that's pretty close in relation to all our other family.  Jesus also has another cousin, Marcel and his family, who live just 25 minutes away right here in a suburb of Dallas and we hang out with them often. They joined us for our Spring break weekend when Uki and Karen came to town.  Oh and Marcel's brother, Oliver, just moved here too!  His wife and kids will be joining him once they tie up their odds and ends in Florida and I'm excited to meet them...well we've met but only brief occurrences.  While there are only two (now three!) cousins here in Texas, they and their wives and kids are so awesome and have made us feel like we have friends here and we love being able to hang out with them!

Here our some of our adventures from the week:

Adventures at Klyde Warren Park

Ligia's beautiful, delicious crepe buffet

kid's table

A cousin's reunion...these 4 guys were born in Dominican Republic and then came over to Miami together as kids!

Karen and Uki were dog sitting and if you've known me long enough, you know how impossible it seems that I'd be in a photo with two dogs!  I've grown up!

The cousin's beautiful wives! So excited to live by a "Sprinkles" bakery.

Ten minute road trip to go see the Dallas LDS Temple.

This wasn't Spring Break but I never documented it.  I'm starting to make friends and we took a pro makeup class together!
The most exciting thing that's happened lately is Jesus got a new job right here in the Dallas area!  It's what we came here for and it's a weight lifted off our shoulders.  It's great to see Jesus so happy as he is very hopeful about this new position.  As for me, I am finishing the school year as Garden coordinator/teacher at Stonewall Jackson.  Once school's out for the summer, I'm planning to return to my life as a stay at home mom and I am SO excited! I had a moment this week, pushing my kids in their double stroller around the mall and I was just so happy.  It was that moment that really confirmed my decision.  I want to go to the mall, the library, the park and just be with these kids.  Not to mention, we want more kids and aren't getting any younger.  I realize I'm going to feel like I never get a break again because there are no vacation or sick days but I like that option more than the busy-ness I'm feeling now.  I get up early, go to work, come home, make dinner, clean, take the dog out, change diapers, briefly play and put the kids to bed. While both scenarios of working full time or being home full time are incredibly busy, I just know which one I want right now in my life.  I'm grateful to have a supportive Principal that announced to the staff that I would be quitting to stay home with my children.  If there is anything that supports women's rights, it was this.  You don't tell a woman to go to work and you don't tell a woman to stay home.  You tell her to do what she wants and I am grateful I have the opportunity to do that as I know not everyone does.  Here are some recent photos of my little lovelies for your viewing pleasure.

With this new job comes the nervousness I'm feeling bringing the kids to daycare.  Sometimes my anxiety feels like a lump in my throat making it difficult to breathe.  We have a very sweet Ecuadorian woman in our apartment complex who has watched several kids around here and currently watches one little girl Joaquin's age so he and her will be great friends.  The bonus is our daycare lady only speaks Spanish which will be great for our kids.  KJ is in the stage of crying whenever mom or dad go out of sight so I am hoping she can adjust well.  Dropping her off will be hard.  I might be most concerned about our little dog however.  The longest he's been alone is 6 hours so 9 hours will be a stretch and I just don't want him developing separation anxiety. I know we will all adjust as this is temporary.  (Any dog tips for those that leave theirs are welcomed!)

The last exciting thing this week is we have been potty training Joaquin!  I'd like to say we potty trained him but I don't want to jinx anything.  He's been accident free for 2 days and we've only been training for 4 so I can't speak too quickly but our daycare lady is going to support us in our efforts thank goodness!  I really think waiting 'til he was 3 was a great idea.  *knock on wood.*

Back to work tomorrow...

We are not alone.

On this beautiful Sabbath morning, I thought I'd share the talk I gave in church last week.  It has some beautiful quotes and scripture.

Often times in our life we notice coincidences or times we just got lucky or we write on social media, #blessed.  But today I’m telling you it’s more than that.  I want to illustrate how the Lord has had a hand in my life . He is with us every step of the way through both our trying times and our good times.  It’s important that we show gratitude and ackowledge his hand.

Psalm 100 speaks about gratitude really beautifully
1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Some time over 5 years ago, I received a job offer to teach at a little red brick school in the mountains.  I was at an inner city elementary school teaching in Minneapolis at the time and was ready for a slower change of pace.  At the same time, I had just begun dating a new guy.  I flew out for my interview and was really in love with this school and the mountains that I didn’t have where I’m from in MN.  As I flew home from my interview on the plane, I sat next to this woman and I told  her all about my interview AND about the guy I was dating and how he was conflicting my decision to take this great job.  She told me I would feel peace in which decision I made.  She told me, “I think you already know what to do.”  Well, I was not about to give up my dream job for some guy…but I felt no peace in accepting that position.  I stayed in MN and continued dating this guy and then we got married! I emailed this woman on the plane to tell her what happened because I knew she’d be ecstatic but she never wrote back.  I’ve even searched for her on facebook like a creepy little stalker. I never found her or heard from her again even though we exchanged contact info on that plane.  I swear now she was an angel sent to sit with me and tell me “that I would feel peace in my decision.”  I learned that the Lord doesn’t want me to be confused and I was confused about taking that job and I wasn’t confused about marrying my husband.

Elder Scott has taught us that sometimes our decisions can be made with a confirming assurance. He said: “you can feel the peace, comfort, and assurance that confirm that your decision is right.”

So my husband and I lived the American dream and bought a brand new beautiful home, got a dog, had a baby, etc.  And then my husband randomly saw a job opening in the Dominican Republic, the country where he was born.  Now who’s going to just up and leave to a third world country with a  three month old baby and both of us had jobs in Minnesota that we would need to quit?  Just apply for fun, just interview and see, we thought, no big deal.  And then we got the offer!  How were we going to quit both our jobs?  I was a teacher on maternity leave at the time!  You can’t just quit on maternity leave. What were we going to do with our new house and all of our furniture?  It was much too expensive to ship back and forth between countries.  Then,  a family in our ward offered to rent our home while we were living abroad and if that wasn’t a sign to go, I don’t know what is.  Both our jobs understood the opportunity and told us we were welcome back anytime.  It truly felt like the Lord was making a way for us to take this opportunity.

President Hinckley has said: I too believe that God will always make a way where there is no way. I believe that if we will walk in obedience to the commandments of God, if we will follow the counsel of the priesthood, He will open a way even where there appears to be no way.”

Once we got to Domincan Republic, it was tremendously hard.  I didn’t speak much Spanish (I do now) , I was not a student, I was not a missionary.  I was a woman with a new baby who had to learn how to live in a 3rd word country with no Target store to buy my neccessities and where I didn’t speak the language.  I had to learn where to grocery shop, how to pay bills, how to get around walking, by taxi or in the public cars that crammed as many people in as they could without seatbelts all with my small baby while my husband went to work.  How could I make friends when I couldn’t even communicate?  I cried a lot.  As time went on, our ward became the greatest blessing in our life.  I was called to YW and had to teach…in Spanish!  I taught English classes to the community.  Another young womens leader became my best friend and she practically brought me tracting through the city each Sunday to visit the young women in their homes.  I became happy by doing service.

I learned I can do hard things living there.

Phillipians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

But the best part was for as much service as I did that helped me find happiness, the people there served me more. I needed them.  I needed my possy of youth to walk me home every night after mutual or English class after dark.  I needed friends from the ward to come over and have FHE with us.  They took us in, they helped us with whatever we needed when they had so little .  They had tiny homes where you could see the rafters holding the roof up from the inside, concrete floors and curtains hanging for a bedroom door.  Yet they were some of the happiest people I’ll ever know. I was a changed person because of their humility and gratefulness to the Father.

Richard C. Edgely reminds us: “Yes, the strength of the Church is in the millions of humble members striving every day to do the will of the Savior—day by day, one step at a time. These humble members come from all nationalities, all social strata, and every economic background. They include those of the highest educational backgrounds as well as those of the humblest who live in the smallest hamlets in the most remote areas of the world—all having hearts throbbing with a vital testimony of Jesus Christ and a desire to serve the Lord.”

Now finally I’ll tell you, how did we end up in Texas?  After living in the Dominican Republic, we returned to MN for a year and a half and quickly rememberd  how cold Minnesota was.  So we thought and thought about states all over the country that were warm and Texas made the list! There are better housing prices and lower taxes here in comparison as well.  Dallas is a huge city with a great food scene so…why not?  Why not move to Texas?  This decision did not feel as “led” as the Dominican Republic decision but our prayer became, “just stop this if it isn’t right”.  Well we’re here and haven’t fallen flat on our faces yet so I think the Lord is ok with it and there is a reason.  We did not have a job re-locating us here or school or anything.  We just wanted to come so we both applied to jobs until one of us found something, we got an apartment and here we are!  And so far, we really love it here!

Jeffrey R. Holland has said: “God expects you to have enough faith and determination and enough trust in Him to keep moving, keep living, keep rejoicing. In fact, He expects you not simply to face the future (that sounds pretty grim and stoic); He expects you to embrace and shape the future--to love it and rejoice in it and delight in your opportunities. God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can't if you don't pray, and He can't if you don't dream. In short, He can't if you don't believe.”

It was a leap of faith for us to be here and still feels that way as not everything in our plan to be here is figured out yet but we have faith it will be soon.

Sometimes God answers prayers with no response.  Elder Richard G. Scott has said: When you are living worthily and your choice is consistent with the Savior’s teachings and you need to act,” proceed with trust.”

All in all, The Lord knows us and he knows it will be ok even when we don’t.  We have had to put our faith in the Lord through this move as we were a little spontaneous but the prayer of asking the Lord to stop this if it isn’t right has been helpful because it hasn’t been stopped.

Dieter F. Uchtdorf has said:
Brothers and sisters, the most powerful Being in the universe is the Father of your spirit. He knows you. He loves you with a perfect love.

With all stories I just told, there is no way for this not to be true in my life!  Heavenly Father is the Father of my spirit.  I am his.  He loves me. And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Decorating Dallas

I've got a long way to go before becoming the designer of my dreams but I sure have fun practicing each time I move.  Some of the key words I wanted to incorporate in our Dallas apartment were: modern, open, functional, industrial, clean, and comfortable.  I wanted the home to say, "for adults but kids live here." The motto for our stuff has been, if there is no place for it, it can't stay.  And finally, I wanted to include my husband in our decorating.  I have dreams of more bling and glam in my design but that doesn't really fit Jesus so we agreed on most things together (minus the cow pillow in the living room...I think the thought of living in Texas made me buy that!).  I'm not saying I accomplished all of my key words like a pro but I do like what we have come up with.

Want to see?!

The main living area is where I really imagined some of my key words from above.  I'm particularly happy with the children's book/toy storage from Ikea because of the modern, shiny white shelving and those baskets! My couch pillows just came today from Amazon and that makes me happy too (even...no, I mean especially, the cow!)

The dining area:  I needed something above that pass through window so I found that cute little "love more" sign matching the arrow pattern of my couch pillows.  I love the industrial, steel looking dining chairs from Target. And I'm pleased with the photos on the wall of our family and the Santo Domingo, LDS Temple.

Bedroom: Right now it looks straight out of a furniture store but I think some accent pillows on the bed and maybe some art above the headboard will perk it right up one day.  The design blogs and Pinterest say all the rage is to get pieces that aren't matchy matchy but with moving so much, I ain't got time for that and just wanted something done! For now, I love how masculine this room looks as this was one of the rooms I especially paid attention to Jesus's ideas and not just mine.  Also, our kids are all up in our life 24/7 so I wanted the bedroom to be a reminder of just Jesus and I so when you notice the pictures, notice the no kids allowed.

The kid's room could use some design but for now it's white, simple, has space to play, and includes the drawings of each of child at one month. Remember before Joaquin was born, I designed that awesome nursery, painted the crib blue, re-finished the dresser etc. etc. (with the help of my friends)?  Well, after moving so much, I just didn't have time for that this time around. Khaleesi got the shaft in decorating but I like this simple apartment room she shares with her brother with matching beds...again I say one day, for when I go all out on a kid's room again!

Bathroom: Double vanities and some pics on the wall from Dominican Republic, what more could I want?!  A modern tile walk in shower? Sure but that's beside the point.  Our apartment is pretty old but they've done a nice job updating it with granite counters and faux wood floors.

Those are indeed Texas stars holding up that shower curtain,

Kitchen: I didn't do any decorating in here but don't the white cupboards and granite counters pretty the place up?
